Mass trapping

At PROBODELT we have become pioneers in introducing the technique of mass trapping at a large scale. We have over 10 years of experience with the rice borer (Chilo suppressalis), Mediterranean fruit fly and olive fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata and Bactrocera oleae) as well as with other pests of different crops (Plutella xylostella, Gorthyna xanthenes, etc.).

The main pests for which PROBODELT provides a mass trapping service are:

We carry out mass trapping by adapting ourselves to the features of the crop and the field according to a customized protocol. The service consists of:

  • Previous analysis of the pest problem in the area.
  • Positioning of traps with the attractant and insecticide with the distribution and density suitable for the land features.
  • Monitoring of trappings and damage throughout the whole season. Attention is given to secondary pests.
  • Suggesting additional action to help guarantee an optimum control of the pest based on treatment thresholds.
  • Assessment of results obtained and handing over of the corresponding report.
  • Removing the traps from the field.

The technical monitoring we carry out on the fields where we apply mass trapping includes assessments throughout the season of the pest population level and damage to the crop.

All this information allows us to establish most important issues to consider:

  1. To use the kind of material which guarantees the greatest number of trappings during the period of time when the crop is sensitive to the pest.
  2. If the persistence of the attractant allows for it, it is advisable to bring forward the positioning of the traps as early as possible.
  3. On big areas, higher levels of control are achieved. In any case, very satisfactory results are achieved on small areas too.
  4. When deciding the distribution of the traps, adults’ emergence focuses have to be taken into account, either from other crops or from weeds.
